In total, 116993629 people stood up across the entire world. That's almost 2% of the entire planet's population!

In Singapore, 14514 people stood up against poverty. That's more than three times the figure that stood up last year!

This is heartening. The campaign will run until the deadline of the MDGs - 2015. Continue fighting for the rights of those ill-equipped to seek their own - and make poverty history.

43 MILLION STOOD UP AND SPOKE OUT.

Across Singapore, more than 3000 people Stood Up yesterday to demand a world without poverty and abundance for all.  The biggest turnouts locally were at Raffles Girls School and Hwa Chong Junior College.  At the M Hotel, 72 passionate individuals Stood Up to call on world leaders to honour their commitments to end poverty within a generation.

Look for a photo of the Stand Up event at Raffles Girls School in the Home section of today's Straits Times.

We've uploaded a few photos from last night's event to the standagainstpoverty section of Flickr.  We'll be uploading more soon to ONE (SINGAPORE)'s website and Flickr page.
the campaign will continue until 2015 - the deadline for the MDGs. until then, let's hope that citizens like ourselves will continue in the effort to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY.

GOOD MOOOORNING, WORLD! (specifically, RGS STUDENTS / TEACHERS / STALKERS / COMPATRIOTS)
after THE NOTEBOOK PROJECT, café presents to you STAND UP IN RGS!!

Stand Up and Speak Out Against Poverty

To keep things short and simple:
in 2000, leaders around the world signed the Milennium Declaration, a global effort to halve poverty by 2015. IT IS 2007 NOW AND THE GOAL SEEMS FAR FROM BEING REACHED. Every day, more than 50 000 people die due to preventable causes: and we, the FIRST GENERATION, can push for better aid, debt cancellation, fair trade and equality!

On 17th October 2007, RAFFLES GIRLS' SCHOOL (SECONDARY) will be STANDING UP AND SPEAKING OUT AGAINST POVERTY by taking a pledge and improving their awareness on such issues. As this is an international event, this will receive extensive media coverage! Everyone (teachers too!) will have the chance to wear school-approved white shirts, white wristbands / strings (now it's time to pull them out!), and go crazy & passionate on that day! Yaaaay!

Secondary 4 students will also form the words STAND UP in the Tan Leng Neo Parade Square! Aerial photographers (from our school's very own Photographic Society, no less!) will snap this symbolic moment, together with others all around the globe. This year, organizers hope that at least 47 million will STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST POVERTY!

In the meantime, show your support by:
1. Saying 'Yes, I am Attending!' on Facebook
2. Telling your friends about this event!
3. Changing your MSN nickname / personal message / Facebook status to indicate, 'I WILL STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST POVERTY!'
4. Putting these funky additions on your blog or webpage! )

and finally, 5. ATTENDING THE EVENT!

hello!
just an update on TNbP:
things have more or less come to a standstill, now awaiting final money count from [info]applewagonstar to be given to WorldVision for The Lighthouse Programme in Mongolia! :D we still have leftover books, but i think we'll probably keep those to be sold at other functions. many thanks to all artists and volunteers involved!

also, exciting upcoming event:
October 17th (in Singapore it's 0500h on the 17th to 0500h on the 18th).

In 2000, leaders of 189 countries signed the Millennium Declaration, a global plan to halve extreme poverty by 2015. Yet, every day, 50,000 people die due to extreme poverty. Ours is the first generation that has the means to Make Poverty History. We need more and better aid, debt cancellation, fair trade, gender equality and public accountability.
On 17 October, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, people across the globe will literally and symbolically STAND UP and SPEAK OUT to demand that world leaders keep their promises to end extreme poverty. Last year, 23.5 million people stood up against poverty. This year, organizers are hoping to double that number!

members of café have mobilized to initiate Stand Up events in their respective schools where we hope to gather as many students as possible to say the Stand Up pledge to show that we will not continue to stand for inaction and unfulfilled promises. accompanying activities that are being organized alongside the events include banner painting and handprinting, sales of White Bands and possibly button badges.
want to organize an event in your school? contact us at la.cafetiere [at] gmail.com
already have activities lined up for that day and want to let us know/would like media coverage? drop a comment or an email with how we can contact you!

HELLO, INHABITANTS OF PLANET EARTH.

Here is the lowdown on The Notebook Project thus far, and how you can do your part.

Currently, Hwa Chong Institution (College), Methodist Girls' School and Raffles Junior College have agreed to work with us - they will let us conduct sales on the school premises ISN'T THIS BRILLIANT? 8D Raffles Girls' School is being icky with red tape and Raffles Institution has not replied to our emails and such, sadly. )):

What you need to do now, as members of this fine community, is to Publicise. Yes, that means you, folks. Since we are moving into the sales part of our Grand Plan, we need actual people to come down and give us actual cash for our notebooks.

WHICH TRANSLATES INTO:

GO FORTH, MY MINIONS. SPREAD THE NEWS THAT NOTEBOOKS ARE ABOUT TO BE SOLD IN YOUR SCHOOLS. MAKE ALL YOUR FRIENDS BUY NOTEBOOKS. MAKE YOUR OGs BUY NOTEBOOKS. MAKE YOUR TEACHERS BUY NOTEBOOKS. MAKE EVERYONE BUY NOTEBOOKS, DAMMIT. PROMOTE TO YOUR RELATIVES OVER CHINESE NEW YEAR. GET ORDERS FROM THEM.

Sales at Hwa Chong and MGS will be on the 22nd and 23rd of February, at RJC it will be around the end of February as well. The notebooks are priced at $6-$10 each, and 60% of the money will go to WorldVision, in aid of children in Mongolia.

If your friends are interested to know more about café and/or WorldVision, get them to come down as well!

Spread the word, the curd, the inverse surd, whatever floats your boat, honey. ♥
